What is competitive brokerage?

In 2013, Mariana Andrade coins the term Competitive Brokerage and starts writting about the antecedents of competitive brokerage, and the relationship between competitive brokerage and firm performance.

In 2015, Mariana Andrade finished her dissertation, where she theoretically and empirically analyzed the following:

  • The relationship between competitive brokerage and firm performance. This section analyzes the effects of competitive brokerage on firm performance. 
  • The relationship between collaboration networks and competition networks under the context of competitive brokerage. This section focuses on analyzing the effects of strategic centrality (centrality in a collaboration network) and competitive brokerage. 
  • The relationship between IT-enabled information management capability (IMC) and competitive brokerage. This section studies how information technologies can aid firms to manage their information in competition networks. 
  • The relationship between firm resources and competitive brokerage. This section suggests that firm resources can shape the competitive brokerage of a firm.  

About us

Mariana Andrade is an Assistant Professor in the ITOM division at Nanyang Business School (Nanyang Technological University). Before joining NTU, Mariana was an assistant professor in Information Systems and Technology in IE Business School

Her main research interests lie in the intersection of Strategic Management and Information Systems. She mainly focuses in four areas: IT strategy, embedded economy, competitive dynamics and data analytics. She has presented her work in several international conferences such as the Thirty-Fifth International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in Auckland. Other part of her work was presented in the 2014 Annual Meeting of The Academy of Management and the 2015 and 2014 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS). Her paper with the title "Competititve Brokerage: External Resource Endowment and Information Technology as Antecedents" received the "Best Student Paper Runner-up Award" in the Annual Meeting of The Academy of Management (OCIS Division). 

Dissertation and further publications

In late 2013, Abhishek Katuria joins Mariana Andrade, bringing elements of IT-enabled capabilities into the study of the antecedents of competitive brokerage. 

In 2014, the first paper related to competitive brokerage is accepted by the Academy of Management Meeting and is awarded a "Best Paper Award". More info.... The Academy of Management Proceedings and Best Paper Award recognize the novelty and contributions of the concept. This provides solid evidence that the concept was created and conceptualized by Andrade et al. (2014).

In late 2014, Hsiao-Hui Lee joins the team and contributes with elements related to operations management to the concept of competitive brokerage. 

Competitive brokerage in the context of competition networks is a term coined by Mariana Andrade in her doctoral dissertation in 2015. Competitive brokerage refers to the indirect competition between firms in a competition network.
